Dj Southside was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. Growing up on a steady diet of hip hop and dance music has led him to rock out parties all across the U.S. Whether he is playing House, Hip Hop, or in a Dj battle you know he is going to bring it every time he steps behind the decks!!

It all started in 1994 when a friend asked him to a party. Little did he know he was about to find his life calling. “My friend took me to the now infamous Packard Plant to Ritchie Hawtin’s Spastik party. It was the craziest shit I’ve ever seen!! I remember seeing these guys play records and was amazed at how they totally controlled the vibe of the party. After watching Ritchie Hawtin play Spastik LIVE I was hooked” Recalls Dj Southside.

Shortly after that party a co-worker by the name of Dj Space Ace agreed to show him how to DJ. Showing him the fundamentals, Dj Southside took in all he was taught and ran with it.

“I practiced all I could. After practcing together for so long we became really good friends. We would spend 3-4 hours in various record stores digging in the crates."

In 1995 Southside played his first party at 43 Summit. A house located in Ypsilanti, MI where nationwide Djs would come play.” It was this old frat house that a bunch of my Dj friends lived in. We would throw crazy ass parties every weekend. We had a system set up in the living room ,and would have big name djs who happened to be in town come play. We had legends like Johnny Saco, Twonz, Murat, Will Webb, Dj Seoul and Dj Eclipse grace the tables.” After about a year the house was found to be condemned by the city and the residents were forced to move out. “It was a sad day when we got the news. Everyone was bummed so we throw one last going away party. We must have had like 300 people in the house just dancing their asses off.” Years later Dj Space Ace and Southside formed a record label called 43 Summit. (It was the address of the house) “Some of the best parties I ever played where in that house. The vibe was ALWAYS top notch!”

During the same year Southside also began to spin underground parties in downtown Detroit. Playing alongside some of the biggest names from around the world. "When I first started playing parties I would play Ghettotech, but this was way before the term was coined.” As one of the only “white” djs playing this music at the time he quickly became a crowd favorite. “I think at the time there were like 4 or 5 white guys playing shit like that. (Dj Godfather, Shortstop, Dj Nasty, Will Webb, and Dj Dick were amongst the few) This was before Disco D came onto the scene. I would go out every weekend to predominantly black clubs and play. Everyone would look at me like “who the hell is the white boy?!” that quickly changed when they saw him play. “I was really into DMC videos at the time so I started scratchin and doing body tricks. I gained a lot of respect for my style and skill on the tables because of this” Although he was playing Ghettotech he never lost his love for house music. “I would buy mainly Ghettotech records but at the time I was building my house and techno collection too. I knew I would soon want to get to my roots of house and techno and surprise everyone the one set I didn’t play Ghettotech.”

Move forward to 1997 with no new music coming out of Chicago or Detroit. Southside decided it was time to show the world a different side of him…”I always did the unexpected so one party I decided I was going to play house, And everyone went fucking crazy!!” After establishing himself as a bass dj Southside began to spin house. “I still went at it with the same idea Cut, Scratch, Backspin, Backspin SLAM just like Claude Young used to do!!”(Claude Young is one of my inspirations) For the next 3 years Southside spun at most of the underground events in Detroit. “I love all music from bass, electro, house, techno, to 80’s dance tracks there’s no way to know what I’ll play next!!” And this is what keep Southside on top till 2001.
“In 2001 or so Detroit’s underground went to shit!!” Around 2000
-2001 Detroit’s scene started to decline due to the police starting to raid most parties. Few parties lasted while most were busted. “After my son was born I started to be more of a stay at home dad and get a “REAL” job so I spun less, and less parties” Then everything took a toll on Southside when he was at a party and got a ticket for being a dj. “The police wrote me a ticket for illegal occupation dj. Which it is NOT illegal in Detroit.” After countless court apperances Southside was given a $250 fine. “That was sooo much money being a new dad. So I decided to stop playing house and play top 40 hip hop to make money and still dj. I felt like I sold my soul to the devil!!” For the next 4 years Southside spun hip hop in radio friendly clubs.”I’ve gotten soo sick of the music being played or requested in the clubs I had to get back to my roots!”

Now it’s 2007 with house and techno coming back in Detroit in a big way. Southside has decided to reclaim his place as a pioneer in the dj scene. “I’ve played soooo many different types of music over the last 12 years that no matter what crowd I have they WILL be shaken they asses!!!” So as Southside begins to move into new directions with playing and producing electronic music expect nothing but the best of what music has to offer.” I’ve been around the block and back! I’ve seen dj’s come and go! What's going to keep me here is playing all the tracks ya want to shake ya ass to and nothing less. The day I play wack music is the day I retire!!! So begins a new era………...
